The Generic ASCII Serial Communication Module (MVI94-GSC) provides a fast and easy way to add two fully-configurable ASCII communication ports to the FLEX platform. The MVI94-GAC module is a single-slot, backplane compatible solution for the Allen-Bradley FLEX platform. Both ports support the sending and receiving of large ASCII character strings. WIth the implementation of supporting ladder logic, many different devices that support ASCII communications can be integrated into the FLEX platform.

Features

THe MVI94-GSC module has two active serial ports. PRT2 is jumper-configured for direct or multi-drop field communication via RS-232/422/485.

Two ASCII ports are configured independently, allowing the module to operate using numerous configurations. Once configured via ladder logic, the module will support the movement of ASCII character strings to/from the FLEX processor's data space.

The MVI94-GSC module is the ideal solution for the many applications where ASCII character communications need to be added to the FLEX platform. Example applications involving the MVI94-GSC module can be found in many industrial sectors generally involving the following applications.

• Bar Code Scanner interfaces
• Weigh Scale Interfaces
• Legacy ASCII protocol connections
• Terminal Port Emulation
• Printer Driver (Alarm/Status printer)

Functional Specifications

• Both ports capable of transmitting and/or receiving ASCII character strings
• Each port is individually configurable, including the following parameters:
• Termination Types: Stream Mode, Termination character(s), Message Timeout, Intercharacter timeout, Packet size limit

Baud Rate: 110 to 115.2K baud

Parity: None, Even, Odd

Stop Bits: 1 or 2

Data Bits: 5 to 8

RTS On/Off Timing: 0 to 65535 ms

Min Response Delay: 0 to 65535 ms

Handshaking (optional)

Hardware: RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR

Software: XON/XOFF

• ASCII character strings up to 4096 characters in length supported
• Full hardware handshaking control, providing radio, modem, and multi-drop support
• Memory usage that is completely user-configurable supporting the storage and transfer of up to 4000 registers to/from the control processor
• Module Error and Status conditions returned to processor for diagnostic purposes, including:

• All ASCII and configuration data related to the module is transferred to/from the module in a pre-defined format to eas in the configuration, monitoring, and interfacing with the module
• Module configuration and communication configuration data is transferred to the MVI94-GSC using a pre-defined data structure
